What is GitHub? Plus your first project on it, step by step
GitHub keeps your projects and every change you made, and lets a whole team work together. Here are the steps to put your first project on it in minutes.
GitHub is a site where you keep your projects, and it saves a copy of every change you make. Break something? Go back to any earlier version in one click.
Why every developer uses it - Your work never gets lost, even if your laptop dies. - A whole team can work on the same project at the same time, and GitHub puts it together without anyone breaking anyone else's work. - The code of the biggest apps lives there: read it, learn from it, and suggest changes.
Your first project, step by step ## 1. Create an account Go to github.com and sign up for free.
2. Create a repository Click + at the top, choose New repository, name it, tick Add a README file, and click Create repository.
3. Upload your files On the repository page click Add file, then Upload files, drag your files in, write a short note about the change, and click Commit changes.
4. Edit and see the history Every upload is saved as a new version. The Commits tab shows them all and lets you go back to any one.
5. Put your website online for free If your project is a website, open Settings, then Pages, choose the main branch and click Save. A minute later your site is live.
Start today with a small project, and share this with someone who doesn't use GitHub yet.
